Swami Agnivesh was born in Andhra Pradesh on September 21, 1939. He was born in a family of Brahmin Santani Hindu and was named as Vepa Shyam Rao. After losing his father at the age of four, he was brought up by his grandfather (maternal), who was the Diwan of Chattisgarh, which was then called as Sakti, the princely State.
Swami Agnivesh’s academic background was of Law and Commerce. He worked as a management lecturer in St. Xavier College, Kolkata. Besides, he was practicing law with Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Swami’s senior, later became Chief Justice of India.
